Course 1: Biomechanical analysis of bone in terms of its structure
This course will provide you advanced knowledge in structural behaviour of the bone. After finishing the course you will:
be able to determine the stress-strain state in the bone
have competences to manage the definition of complex design criteria applied to the femur.

advanced knowledge of fracture repair methods and characteristics of different (conventional/functional) plaster casts.
ability to apply the suitable osteosynthesis method for a certain type of fracture.
autonomy in the application of each method of surgical fracture repair: conventional and functional plaster casts.

The course provides knowledge of the main functions of different surgical fracture repair methods (osteosynthesis) including screw fixation, plates, IM nails and external fixators. After studying it you will be:
able to select the suitable osteosynthesis method for a certain type of fracture and
demonstrate autonomy, professional integrity and commitment to the application of each method of surgical fracture repair (screw fixation, plates, IM nails and external fixators) according to the basic principles related to the function of different fixation systems.
Learning objectives:
Understand the mechanism of fracture repair, as well as its characteristic properties
Be familiar with the main screw fixation systems
Identify the different parts of a screw and how they affect the fixation process
Be familiar with the different types of plates in current use and their function
Understand the basic principles relating to the function of plate fixation and the considerations to bear in mind when using it.
Be familiar with the function of intramedullary fixation, its objectives and the field of application
Identify the various factors that affect nail resistance
Know which factors should be considered when using intramedullary fixation
Understand the main aims of external fixation and when its use is indicated.
Understand the advantages and disadvantages of such fixation systems.
Identify the different types of fixation in current use and understand the differences between them through comparative studies.
After finishing this course you will have:
advanced knowledge of anatomic reduction, stability of osteosynthesis and preservation of blood supply.
ability to select the correct indications according to the fracture characteristics and apply the principles of osteosynthesis so as preserve the blood supply, obtain anatomic reduction and stable osteosynthesis.
competence to manage complex technical and surgical activities, taking responsibility for decision-making in predicted and in-predicted situations in Surgical Treatment of Fractures.

autonomy and professional integrity and avoid errors when performing an osteosynthesis, by the use of pre-operative planning and correct implant choice, while being aware of the importance of self-criticism and self-audit.
