Project Partners

EduNano project features well-balanced partnerships in terms of organisations involved and expertise required. Different stakeholders from the sector and partners with different expertise are involved: in the multidisciplinary subject matter, in instructional design and evaluation, in educational video and eLearning environment development, in teaching and training. It involves representatives of all target groups: universities including researchers, teachers and students; enterprises in the sector of nanotechnologies.

The project is based on a multilateral partnership between higher education institutions in the EU and Israel. It involves six higher education institutions from different geographical regions of Israel including all Nano centres in the country; two social partners/industrial partners, and three higher education institutions with expertise and experience in nanotechnologies and curriculum development from the EU Member States.

The Technical University of Sofia (TUS), the largest technical higher educational and research establishment in Bulgaria, is an independent government-funded educational institution. Currently, over 12 thousand students are studying on degree programmes at 17 faculties and Institutes.

The Department of Microelectronics is a national technological centre in micro- and nano-technologies. It offers teaching programs, research opportunities, and industrial collaboration in electronics, microsystems and semiconductor science and technology. The practical training will be performed in the ECAD laboratory and in collaboration with the National Centre for Nanotechnologies at the Academy of Sciences.

ECAD Laboratory is a National information and training centre in design of ICs, microsystems etc.

The activities of the TeLEARN laboratory focus on the integration of eLearning, knowledge management, and electronic performance support systems. TeLEARN coordinated/participated in18 projects from LLP.

TUS will coordinate all project activities, perform the need analysis, develop two courses: "Design of nanoscale ICs" and "Defaults and non-invasive testing of nanodevices", develop e-learning materials of the courses at the TeLearn laboratory; plan and organise the pilot test in the MSc degree programme in micro- nanoelectronics at TUS.

The Bar-Ilan University (BIU) is the fastest-growing institution of higher education in Israel. Over 30,000 students pursue degrees on our campus just outside Tel Aviv and in our six regional colleges across Israel. These and thousands more who are enrolled in enrichment programs would greatly benefit from interactive-online learning.

The Bar Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials (BINA) inaugurated in 2007 is home to 43 top researchers with extensive expertise in nano-based research related to materials, medicine, communications, electronics, photonics and energy. Now in its third year BINA’s MSc program is structured around a group of courses and lab-based projects that gives an integrated introduction to the multi-disciplinary challenges of nano-based research. Our Center for advanced scientific instrumentation includes state of the art equipment dedicated for electron microscopy, nano fabrication, surface analysis, magnetic and fluorescence measurements.

Conducting a need analysis survey among graduate students and lab trainers to prioritize the recording of hands-on lab procedures and operating instructions for laboratory instrumentation.

Development of 2 frontal curricular BIU courses: 'Modern optical and mechanical methods of material nano-characterization' and 'Laboratory in modern optical and mechanical methods of material nano-characterization'. Each course will target at least 20 students.

The Samuel Neaman Institute for National Policy Research (SNI) was established in 1978 as an independent, non-profit, interdisciplinary public policy research institute. SNI is widely recognized as Israel‘s most fruitful interface between academic community members and decision makers in government, public institutions and industry. The SNI has accumulated extensive experience in the characterization and analysis of science, technology and innovation policies. The SNI has participated notably in the formulation of policies for many issues in Israel, including national infrastructure, economics, education, key S&T sectors like microelectronics, biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. The SNI activities in the area of nanotechnology included mapping the nanotechnology landscape in Israel, case studies among nano companies and a survey of researchers active within the framework of the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute.

Within this project, the SNI team will be the contact point and interface to the industry. In the preliminary stage, SNI team will carry out a survey among industrial companies to study their preferences regarding nanotechnolgy courses. Following, the SNI team will conduct a pilot among a sample of industrial companies in order to get their feedback about the relevancy of the courses, their contribution and added value to the companies. Evaluation of the compatibility of the e-courses to the customers (students and industrial companies) and analysing the feedbacks received from the students in the academia and the industry during the dissemination stage.

Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) has training and research interests in all ICT fields, ranging from higher-level systems up to the circuit and device level. It includes related areas, such as Micro&Nano Systems for nanoelectronics and sensing. In these particular areas, the activities consist in the fabrication of Silicon based microsystems and nanosystems, fundamental research in material science, processes for micro and nanotechnology. In these topics, educational programmes are several, starting from the Master Degree in Nanotechnologies for ICT, up to the offer of courses in Politecnico di Torino faculties as 'CAD for Microsystems', 'Micro&Nano Systems' or 'Bio-Micro&Nano Systems'. For the Master Degree in Electronic Engineering a complete track in “Micro and Nano Systems” is inserted in the educational offer.

POLITO will develop the courses 'Bio-Nanoelectronic devices for biosensing', 'Nano/Microelectronic interfaces for brain studies' and 'Molecular electronics for the realization of novel nanoelectronic devices'; realize videos, where the training sessions will be recorded; deliver the e-learning courses proposed; conduct the practical training in Torino and assessment; Certify the courses with corresponding credits. The dissemination of project results will be done at different levels, from local academic use of the project results, to the presentation of the project on journals and conferences. The POLITO group is responsible for the Eurotraining platform, a course repository of nano/micro electronic courses at European level. Eurotraining will be exploited for the publication of project results and the advertisement of the developed courses.

Tel Aviv University (TAU) is the largest academic institution in Israel, home to 30,000 active students. Tel Aviv University center for nanoscience and nanotechnology was inaugurated in 2000. 66 top researchers are affiliated with the center which runs extensive and expansive activity in all fields of nano research. The center maintains extensive central laboratories which currently service nearly 30 companies. Due to the socioeconomic and security conditions in Israel, students need to be absent from class quite often, which creates a large demand for distant learning. As of now, up to 1500 lecture hours are recorded per semester. During the last 10 years tailored course recording methods have been developed to meet this growing need for distance learning. TAU will coordinate the project activities in Israel.

TAU Educational Media team will provide a video recording service for filming courses\labs\clean rooms\events\etc; provide an online service (portal) for uploading external video content onto server and train the teachers on building online courses.

TAU Nanocenter will perform the need analysis, develop the content and e-learning materials of the courses 'Modern optical and mechanical methods of material nano-characterization' and 'Laboratory in modern optical and mechanical methods of material nano-characterization' for MSc students and emplyee of enterprises. They will do the pilot test and implement the courses and disseminate the project results in Israel.

Grenoble Institute of Technology (CIME) is a cluster of 6 engineering universities.

PHELMA, the PHysics, ELectronics and MAterials engineering school of Grenoble INP offers master level courses on various topics related to nano-technolgies: nano-electronics, bio-technologies, nano-structures analysis, etc.

CIME Nanotech (Centre Interuniversitaire de Microelectronique) is dedicated to provide all needed resources (human and technical) for training, education and research in microelectronics to the needs of all French higher education and SMEs. It offers all the required environments for design, process and measurements in micro and nanotechnologies.

CIME Nanotech will perform the need analysis, and will develop two courses with recorded practical work in clean rooms "Biotechnologies" and "Nanostructures analysis" with practical work of students from Israel in Scanning Probes Microscopy. CIME Nanotech will also organise a workshop in the spectra of the project and will participate in the validation and exploitation of the whole project by offering the developed courses in its educational environment, planning and organisation of the pilot test of the developed within the project courses in France; exploitation - integration of courses developed in the training programmes delivered at CIME NanoTech, partnership with enterprises in microelectronics in France for continuing up-date of courses content to the needs of labour market and new users from industry attracting, dissemination of project results.

Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (TECH), Israel’s only technical university, is Israel’s oldest university, founded in 1924. Since its founding, the institute has educated three generations of men and women who have played a key role in laying the country’s infrastructure and establishing its crucial defense and high-tech industries. At the present Technion’s role at the forefront of the global network of science and technology has never been more vital. The Technion has a unique combination of departments in the basic sciences, engineering, and medicine. There are almost 13,000 students enrolled at the Technion, a very large number for a technical university.

The Technion Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute (RBNI) was the first in Israel, started in 2005. It has been the largest of its kind with over 110 faculty and 250 graduate students affiliated, eleven infrastructure centers, and its educational arm, the Norman Seiden Multidisciplinary Graduate Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology program.

The Technion Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute (RBNI) is involved in all aspects of the field, including research, education, and interaction with industry. The RBNI’s unique graduate program is now open to international students. As such, it needs to develop a bilingual teaching program to allow non-Hebrew speakers easily enroll. The RBNI is also continuously involved in training its own people and industrial users of its state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities. To that end a set of teaching tools to make the training process more accessible and effective is needed. They will develop the courses 'Physics and chemistry of small system' and 'Electron microscopy in chemical engineering'. This content will be prepared as instructional videos and/or training courses for three nanotechnology laboratory modules. Dissemination: the RBNI’s youth education program could very much benefit from a dedicated set of teaching tools.

Ben-Gurion University (BGU), was established in 1969 aiming to bring development to the Negev, a desert area comprising more than sixty percent of the country. Today, Ben-Gurion University is a major center for teaching and research, with campuses in Beer-Sheva, Eilat and Sede Boqer. More than 19,000 students are enrolled in the Faculties of Engineering Sciences, Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Management and the School of Advanced Graduate Studies. New interdisciplinary degree programs are redefining the boundaries between the Faculties and attracting outstanding students.

The Ilse Katz Institute for Nano-Science and Technology (IKI) at BGU brings under one roof a community of scientists working on aspects of fields related to understanding and manipulation of matter at reduced dimensionality. For supporting research, the IKI also provides state-of-the-art facilities for nanoscale fabrication and characterization.

The Characterization Laboratories and Fabrication center at IKI serve as supporting centers for innovation and excellence in research. The center incorporates state-of-the-art infrastructure including: Electron microscopy equipment, X-ray and light scattering, FTIR and Raman, surface analysis facility – XPS and AES, SPM, thermal analysis and custom synthesis.

BGU will develop the courses: 'Biophysical characterization techniques and selected applications in nano-bio and nano-materials' and 'Laser capture microdissection and laser optical trapping techniques and selected applications in nano-biotechnology, nano-medicine and pharmaceutical research'.

They are in a process of establishing training programs that would expose students to advanced characterization techniques. The theoretical background and demo courses will be developed on: interactive video workshops in the A-TEM and the XRD Labs, remote-control video lab course on SEM.

Weizmann Institute (WEIZMANN) located in Rehovot, Israel, is one of the top-ranking Multidisciplinary research institutions in the world. The Department of Science Teaching, is composed of groups working in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, earth and environmental sciences, life sciences, and science and technology for junior high school. In all these areas there are extensive research and development projects, aimed at (1) studying science and mathematics learning and teaching and their development, (2) producing and implementing improved and up-to-date learning and teaching materials that integrate the use of modern technologies, and (3) providing professional development for teachers, all over Israel. In recent years the department is involved in EU projects aiming at enhancing science education both in the formal as well as in the informal level.

In this project, the WEIZMANN team will be the contact point and interface to the general public. We will design a course for chemistry high school teachers that will be designed to promote and disseminate nanotechnology in their chemistry lessons. Nano-literate teachers can open the doors of nanotechnology to their students and provide them with the tools and knowledge necessary to become nano-researchers and nano-innovators in their ultimate careers. In addition to providing teachers' nanoeducation we will administer an advanced course in the field of nanotechnology focusing on the SPM techniques and its applications in research and in the nanotechnology industry. Following courses will be developed: 'Scanning Probe Microscopy and its applications in research and in nanotechnology industry' (for students), 'Introduction to Materials and Nanotechnology for high school teachers', 'Different applications in nanotechnology' (for teachers as well).

Elbit Systems Ltd (Elbit Systems) is the largest high-tech company in the Israel. The main areas of activities are: Electro Optics, Unmanned vehicles, advanced avionics, IT and C4I, EW, Communications, Homeland security. The company has revenues of 2.7 $US and about 13000 employees. Elbit Systems has more than 20 subsidiaries in the US, Asia, Far east, Europe and Australia. The company cooperates with tenths of companies and academic institutions. In the last 2 years the company is deeply involved in engineering activities to Nanotechnology.

The role of Elbit Systems in the project will be to link between the academic institutions and the industry this will be done in two phases:

  • Collecting of requirements from the industry about the relevant areas of Nanotechnology and their implementation in view of the industry;
  • Developing a course for training of employees in the sector "Advanced Materials and Nanotechnologies for Electrochemical Energy Storage".
Elbit will work with SNI and INNI and they will establish a forum of leading industrial companies representatives who make use of nano technologies for the need analysis and to maintain constant dialog with the industry.

Elbit will disseminate in the industry a special section of project site which will be allocated for new research's at the nano centers for training purposes. By flowing the presentations that will be uploaded to this site the industry will stay updated with state of the art ongoing education and research.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJU) was established in 1918 and has 23,500 students enrolled. The university was rated 57th in the world by the Shanghai rating, and is the highest rated in Israel.

The Faculty of Science encompasses research institutes and teaching departments in the fields of natural science. The entire Faculty is located on one campus facilitating convergent and multi-disciplinary research efforts and the development of new research horizons and scientific breakthroughs.

The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is aimed at interdisciplinary research combining chemistry, physics, applied and life sciences, engineering and medicine. About 400 graduates are pursuing studies in nanoscience by using the advanced instrumentation. Research at the Center is concentrated on new materials, molecular and nano-electronics, nano-electrooptics, nanomedicine and nano-biology. The Center serves the mission to educate the next generation of Israel’s scientific and technology.

HUJI will develop two of the following courses: 'Biotechnology in agriculture and environment' for students and trainees and 'Protein engineering and nano- biotechnology' for teachers training. HUJI will also organize three annual meetings of institutional representatives and module coordinators. The first meeting in the beginning of the first year is intended to introduce the Bologna process principles in module designing. By the end of this meeting a tentative general module plan will be introduced. In the second meeting each participant will introduce his module structure to discuss its rational. In addition more detailed discussions about grading system, diploma supplement and quality assurance will be performed. In the third meeting each institution will present its final results as regards to complying with Bologna process principles in his part in program designing.
